You must have a provisional driving licence in order to book your Theory Test.
You don’t have to wait until you are ready to take your Practical Driving Test before sitting the Theory Test. In fact there’s nothing to stop you swatting for the Theory Test and taking it before you’ve even had any driving lessons! The Theory Test fee is currently £23.
There are 2 parts to the test:
You book your Theory Test and take them as a single test and you must pass both parts to pass the test.

These are available to buy in book shops or direct from the Safe Driving For Life web site, where you will also find mobile phone apps, other books, DVD’s etc.
Study these and learn the rules and skills you’ll be tested on.
There are also several companies producing Theory Test DVD’s which contain practice multiple choice and hazard perception tests.
We will give you as much help as possible during your driving lessons.
The PASS mark for this section of the test is 43 out of 50.
The Hazard Perception part of the test requires you to watch fourteen one minute long hazard perception test video clips. Hazard perception clips are computer generated imagery (CGI) and filmed from the perspective of a passenger car driver. You will need to click a mouse button when you observe a developing hazard. All of the hazard perception clips will include one developing hazard, and one will include 2 hazards. The sooner you react to a developing hazard, the more points are scored. Points are from five down to one, with no score if you reacts too late.
The PASS mark for this part of the test is 44 out of a possible 75 points.
